It is above all in the play structure that the weaknesses of the development of Kan Gao and the rest of the Freebird Games team are noticed.

When it comes time to roll out the red carpet for the climax, the wait for the “ooh” moment has been stretched to the point where it leaves no room for anything other than unrewarding expectations. The problem, if anything, lies in the timing and in the ways in which the main narrative strand takes shape and prepares the ground for what will be, in the third act of the work, the unfolding of the “truth” concealed from the beginning: in layman’s terms, sometimes it is not clear which direction the story wants to take and when, instead, it becomes clearer, it is too late to restore polish to everything that came before. The breaking through of the fourth wall and the invasion of references to geeky popular culture are frequent within the game and always manage to pull a smile.įinding Paradise is the sequel to To The Moon, but can also be enjoyed without playing the original work. The nice interludes of Neil and Eva, the two doctors called to give the patient Colin the memories of a life without regrets, are useful to tone down the sometimes mysterious and sad tones of the story. However, the goal is centered in the middle and certainly in a less evident way than Gao’s first work. Where To The Moon, albeit also with ups and downs, had been able to get noticed thanks to a coherent narrative, with some twists and, above all, very emotional and moving, Finding Paradise tries to achieve the same result using situations and different alternations. A narrative roundabout that sometimes bores, albeit with a downward longevity in line with productions of this type (less than five hours), mainly due to playful solutions unable to renew themselves during the adventure and a disappointing emotional impact. Although in the final moments the story partially manages to emerge for what it would have wanted to be from the very beginning, it often tends to get lost, to stumble, to get up and then to change direction.

Is a life full of regrets still worth living? It is an incipit that Finding Paradise, the new production of Freebird Games and Kan Gao, fails to exploit effectively.
